Yea-Sacc 1026®

What is Yea-Sacc 1026®?

Yea-Sacc 1026® is a probiotic that primarily consists of live yeast cells from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. As a probiotic, Yea-Sacc 1026® contributes to healthy gut flora by supporting the growth of beneficial bacteria and suppressing undesirable microorganisms. This can help improve digestion, optimize nutrient absorption, and strengthen the immune system. By adding Yea-Sacc 1026® to the diet, you give the gut an extra push in the right direction, especially when it comes to maintaining balance and preventing digestive issues.

In addition to live yeast cultures, Yea-Sacc 1026® contains no added fillers or synthetic additives; its composition is focused on purity and effectiveness. This ensures the supplement optimally meets the natural nutritional needs of horses and is easy to integrate into their daily feed, without the risk of unwanted side effects or disrupting the existing diet. Thanks to this careful composition, Yea-Sacc 1026® is a reliable choice for those committed to sustainably supporting their horse’s gut health.

Example:

During the transition from dry hay to pre-dried hay, a horse’s digestive system can come under pressure due to the sudden change in feed composition and fermentation processes. Yea-Sacc 1026® can play a valuable role during this period. As this probiotic consists of live yeast cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, it directly supports the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut and helps maintain the balance of the gut flora.

Adding Yea-Sacc 1026® to the diet during this transition ensures smoother digestion. The yeast cells promote a favorable environment for beneficial bacteria, reducing the likelihood of digestive problems such as gas or diarrhea. Furthermore, Yea-Sacc 1026® helps suppress undesirable microorganisms, which is especially important when the type of feed changes and the gut may be temporarily less stable.

By consistently feeding Yea-Sacc 1026® during this transition phase, you give your horse extra support to adapt smoothly to the new diet. This ensures optimal nutrient absorption and strengthens their immune system—so your horse not only makes the transition easier but also stays healthy and vital.

Usage and Dosage Yea-Sacc 1026®

Usage: Yea-Sacc 1026® is a resealable recyclable bag containing 1 kg of Yea-Sacc 1026® powder with a measuring scoop. The powder should be moistened to prevent dusting and to ensure it is eaten by the animal. It is recommended to mix this supplement into a mash.

Dosage:

For an average 500kg horse, 10 grams daily at low dosage and up to 25 grams at high dosage

Duration: At low dosage of 10 grams: 100 days

At high dosage of 25 grams: 40 days

Converted: per 100 kilograms of horse: 2 grams (low dosage) to 13 grams (high dosage) per day

When to use which dosage? Low dosage is intended to prepare and support horses before and during a transition to different roughage. High dosage is intended for horses that already show signs of disturbed gut flora.

Composition: 100% yeast culture based on Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 1026

Yea-Sacc 1026® is a specific probiotic produced by the company Alltech. It contains a live yeast culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae1, which is known for its positive effects on digestion in horses and other herbivores. By adding Yea-Sacc 1026® to the ration, fermentation in the large intestine and cecum is stimulated, leading to better fiber digestion and more efficient nutrient absorption.

Alltech developed Yea-Sacc 1026® in their laboratory with the aim of promoting a healthy microbial balance in the digestive tract. This supplement is often used during periods of feed transition, stress, or increased physical exertion, when the digestive system can use extra support. Users typically notice an improvement in manure consistency, increased appetite, and more vitality in their horses.

In addition to supporting gut health, Yea-Sacc 1026® contributes to a stronger immune system, as healthy gut flora helps the horse become more resistant to pathogens. The product is available in various forms, such as powder or pellets, and can easily be added to daily feed. Alltech guarantees the quality and stability of the yeast cultures through strict production standards and continuous quality controls.

Yea-Sacc 1026® is only available through Alltech who developed the product. Any other product that uses the name in the ingredient list has Alltech as its origin. Hence the ® symbol after the name Yea-Sacc 1026®: Alltech has a patent on this product.

Yes, there are certainly other yeast strains and products than Yea-Sacc 1026® (which is a specific strain of the yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae.) 2

Yea-Sacc 1026® is a live yeast culture specifically selected and researched for improving digestion and performance in animals (primarily ruminants and horses).

Other yeast products and strains used in animal feed (and sometimes for human supplements) include:

  • Brewer’s yeast: This is a byproduct of the brewing process. It consists of dead yeast cells and is used as a source of proteins, B-vitamins and amino acids, but it does not have the same live, digestion-stimulating effect as active yeast cultures like Yea-Sacc 1026®. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is also often referred to as brewer’s yeast or brewing yeast: the origin is the same, it is the development of 1026 that is different: live versus dead and other properties that make the difference.
  • Torula yeast (Torula yeast): This is also an inactive yeast used as a protein source.
  • Other Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains: Various companies use their own patented strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for similar purposes. An example of this is the strain CNCM I-1077 (Levucell SC), which is also used as live yeast in animal feed.
  • Kluyveromyces marxianus: This is a non-conventional yeast species that is resistant to high temperatures and grows quickly, and has potential as a feed additive, although there are fewer studies on it than on Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
  • Candida utilis (Cyberlindnera jadinii): This yeast is used in aquaculture and can improve the growth and gut health of weaned piglets.
  • Yeast metabolites/fermentation products: These are the byproducts that arise during the yeast fermentation process. They no longer contain live yeast cells but do contain bioactive components such as mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and beta-glucans, which support gut health and are often sold under names like Mycosorb or Agrimos.

The choice of a specific product often depends on the intended purpose, such as improving fiber digestion (where Yea-Sacc 1026® is effective), providing proteins, or supporting the immune system.

Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast (single-celled fungal microorganisms). This species has played an important role since ancient times in making wine, baking bread, and brewing beer. It is believed to have originally been isolated from grape skins. It is one of the most intensively studied eukaryotic model organisms in molecular and cell biology, just like Escherichia coli as a model bacterium. It is the microorganism that causes many common types of fermentation. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells are round to oval-shaped, with a diameter of 5-10 μm. It reproduces by budding.

All current forms of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are kept in laboratories where they are also studied. Various strains have been produced, including strain 1026 described here. This strain has shown to contain the most health benefits for grazing animals.
