How do I feed Vitalbix PsylliumMash?
Feed Vitalbix PsylliumMash (preventive) as a cure to support the removal of sand in the intestines Mix PsylliumMash with 1 to 3 parts water for a firmer mash and with 4 parts water for a very thin mash. You can vary with this, just what your horse likes! Use cold or hot, not boiling. Let stand for 10-15 minutes, stir and feed immediately! Not suitable for long periods of time after preparation. The seeds swell, and you want this to happen in the intestines at the right time. For a good effect, do not mix other Vitalbix products, supplements or medication. Always consult your veterinarian first if you are taking medication. Give your horse enough roughage. A continuous supply of fiber helps to drain sand from the intestines and prevent the accumulation of sand in the intestines. In addition, make sure that your horse always has enough drinking water available during the cure!
Dietary recommendations per day
As a preventive cure
100 grams of mash per 100 kg of body weight, 1x per day. A 500 kg horse should be fed 500 grams in one portion, per day. So with 1 bag you can give 12 days (= 2 treatments )!
If sand is found in the manure / intestines
200 grams of mash per 100 kg body weight, 1x per day. You feed a horse of 500 kg 1000 grams in one portion, per day. With 1 bag you have enough for 1 cure. Repeat the course if necessary in consultation with your veterinarian.
If a lot of sand is found in the manure / intestines
200 grams of mash per 100 kg body weight, 2 x per day. A 500 kg horse should be fed 1000 grams in one portion, twice a day. In total, a horse weighing 500 kg per day receives 2 kilos. Repeat the course if necessary in consultation with your veterinarian.
Prevent sand ingestion
Prevent sand ingestment by never feeding hay from a sandy surface. Also, don't let your horse graze on a (too) bare pasture. Check the manure regularly for sand by putting some manure in a clear plastic bag/glove along with water. Do you notice a lot of sand in the manure or does your horse have colic-like symptoms? Always contact your veterinarian immediately. Vitalbix PsylliumMash supports the removal of sand in the intestines, but is not a panacea. Preventing the absorption of (too much) sand remains important, even when you feed a product with psyllium. More tips on prevention and symptoms of sand colic can be found here.
