PPID seemed non-existent in the past. A horse of 15+ simply developed age-related ailments that worsened as it grew older. Sometimes such a senior was lucky, and the veterinarian considered what we then called Cushing’s disease.
Fortunately, this has changed over the last 20 years. New scientific insights have become more accessible to people. We now know that many of those ‘ailments’ are characteristics of PPID; the current name for this unpleasant condition. PPID horses are much less likely to fly under the radar because we ourselves raise the alarm earlier when we suspect our horse has PPID.
