What is the difference between pressed and crunchy kibble?

When looking for dog kibble, you will often come across two types: pressed and crunchy. They may look similar, but they are actually made very differently and have their own characteristics.

Pressed kibble:

Pressed kibble is made at lower temperatures, from around 38 degrees (cold pressed) to 70 degrees (regular pressing). Because it is all a little less hot, only meat meal can be used and no fresh meat. The fat that is added is often less processed, especially if cold-pressed oil or fat is added. These kibbles break down quite easily in the stomach, which is beneficial for digestion.

Extruded and expanded kibbles:

Crunchy kibble – also known as extruded or expanded kibble – is made at much higher temperatures: at least 93 degrees Celsius, but the exact temperature and duration varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. The terms “expanded” and “extruded” actually mean the same thing: during production, the kibble is expanded, giving it that crunchy bite you know and love.

Our sustainable “no waste” packaging is made from a single material that is recyclable. The sustainable “no waste” plastic pet food bags, which are unique to the Benelux, can therefore be disposed of with the collected plastic waste. Please note! Many pet food bags consist of one or more types of plastic with or without a metallised layer, or appear to be made entirely of paper but contain plastic due to the fat barrier. Both of these options are not recyclable or very difficult to recycle.

Please note! When is something recyclable? In short: if it is produced from mono-materials or if it is collected separately. Our tin and pet food packaging (plastic and cardboard) is recyclable and can be disposed of with PMD waste (plastic, metal and beverage cartons). If this is not possible in your municipality, our tin and pet food (LDPE plastic) packaging can be disposed of with the residual waste and will be separated into recyclable and non-recyclable materials by state-of-the-art sorting machines in your municipality. Our new folding cardboard packaging (chocolates and tablets) with FSC certification can simply be disposed of with the waste paper and cardboard in any municipality for recycling.
