ROUGHAGE IS ALWAYS THE BASIS
A lean horse can have several underlying causes, and it is important to have these properly examined before you start supplementing.
Common causes include inadequate or unbalanced nutrition, dental problems, worm infections, stress, pain or underlying conditions such as stomach ulcers or chronic diseases (e.g.PPID).
Older horses also lose weight faster due to reduced nutrient absorption.
Areas of concern include dental condition, deworming schedule, stress factors and forage quality.
A lean horse needs a high-energy but responsible diet. Consider easily digestible roughage such as high-quality hay and/or roughage substitutessupplemented with high-fat and high-fiber feeds such as coconut meal, alfalfa or oily supplements such as linseed oil or coconut fat.
