Provided the can is not damaged, unopened tinned pet food is generally safe to use several months to over a year after the 'best before' date. This date indicates the manufacturer's estimate of when the product will be of its best quality and nutritional value, not an absolute expiry date. The following guide to handling expired tinned pet food is based on industry standards and expert advice.
Safety assessment (before opening): If the tin shows any of the following signs, discard it immediately, as this could indicate botulism:
- Bulging or swollen can: This is a sign of gas production from bacterial activity.
- Rust or severe dents: Dents near seams or leaks can introduce contaminants.
- Spurting liquid: The can should not hiss or spray when opened.
Safety assessment (after opening):
Perform a 'sniff and sight' test.
Odour: If it smells rancid or unusual, do not feed it to your pet.
Colour/texture: Discard any food that is discoloured, mouldy or has an unusual slimy consistency.
Nutritional value: While generally safe, food that is more than two years past its expiry date may have lost significant nutritional value.
Shelf life guidelines:
- 1–12 months past the expiry date: generally safe provided the can is stored in a cool, dry place and is undamaged.
1–2+ years past the expiry date: Still often safe, but check for nutritional degradation.
Opened cans: Store in the refrigerator for 3–5 days only.
