What are natural soil conditioners and what do they do?
Soil conditioners are natural substances that improve the structure, fertility, and biological balance of the soil. These include:
- Rock powders (such as Eifel lava powder or grit, Actimin, and Vulkamin): are rich in trace elements, stimulate soil life, and support nutrient uptake.
- Clay minerals: improve moisture retention, making them essential for dry or sandy soils.
- Seashell lime: a mild, slow-acting source of lime that counteracts acidification without disrupting soil life.
These products are also known as “remedial fertilizers”: you don’t use them every year, but in cycles of 3 to 5 years to replenish structural deficiencies and restore the natural balance. Once this balance is restored and regenerative practices are in place, these soil amendments will be needed less and less frequently.
Which soil conditioner is right for your soil?
Every soil type and situation requires a customized approach. Still, there are a few rules of thumb:
- For dry sandy soil: start with clay minerals to improve water retention.
- After intensive use or on old pasture/farmland: start by replenishing trace elements using rock flour, such as Eifel lava or Vulkamin.
- For acidic soil (low pH): seashell lime balances the acidity without disrupting soil life.
- For compost improvement: mix in rock flour, such as lava flour, into the compost pile for richer, more stable compost.

Lava grit can be used year-round. It is best to apply it during light rain to prevent leaf burn caused by strong sunlight, due to its high silicon content.
