PPID did not seem to exist in the past. A horse aged 15+ simply developed age-related ailments that worsened as it grew older. Sometimes, such a senior horse was lucky and the veterinarian thought of what we then called Cushing’s disease.

We now know that many of these ‘ailments’ are characteristics of PPID, the current name for this nasty condition.
