The foundation of a healthy digestive physiology is a sufficient and high-quality supply of roughage. Unfortunately, there is a tendency nowadays to provide much less or low-quality roughage – even though a healthy, physiologically beneficial supply remains indispensable. If a horse is not given enough high-quality hay or silage, it is at greater risk of developing various ailments.
To maintain healthy intestinal flora, the microoranisms need a minimum content of raw fiber, which can only be provided through roughage feed.

Feeding Recommendation

  • as roughage (100 % hay replacement): approximately 1.5 kg per 100 kg ideal body weight per day
  • as concentrated feed: 1.2 kg substitute approximately 1 kg of grain
  • to enhance roughage: 1 kg replaces 1 kg hay
  • introduce new feed gradually
  • per 1 kg soak with 1.5 to 3 liters of water
  • An AGROBS® feed scoop (1.5 l) holds an average of approx. 720 g of Pre Alpin® Bio Wiesencobs®. To the overview of all product weights.

AGROBS® recommends softening the cobs through soaking.

Are the AGROBS hay substitutes an adequate hay substitution?

Yes, concerning the digestive physiology.

But because the intake of this feed is a little faster in comparison to the intake of hay, enough occupation (e.g. straw, branches, movement, other horses,…) has to be provided when feeding solely.

Which advantages do the AGROBS hay substitutes have over hay or haylage?
-  due to the gentle harvest and conservation by warm air-drying, the quality is always higher
o   free of mildew
o   free of dust
o   richer in vital substances and nutrients
- consistent quality throughout the year
- high content of crude fibre by using the first harvest
- safe ration calculation is possible due to current analysis values
- produced especially for horses
Do the PreAlpin Wiesencobs have to be soaked?
Yes, we always recommend feeding the cobs soaked because of their strong swelling properties.
What is the feeding recommendation for the AGROBS hay substitutes?
Depending on the amount of fed hay/haylage/grass/straw as well as the horse's needs, the feeding requirement differs and should be made individually.
1 kg of the AGROBS hay substitutes substitute 1 kg of hay.
1.2 kg of AGROBS hay substitute product substitutes approximately 1 kg of grain.
What amount of water is needed?
Depending on the desired consistency: soak 1 kg Wiesencobs with 1.5 - 3 litres of water
Should the cobs be soaked in warm or cold water?
Both are possible. The cobs dissolve a little bit faster in warm water und some horses like something warm in winter. Due to the warm water, the contained herbs smell stronger - some horses like that, some do not.
How long should they be soaked?
Approximately 20 - 30 min. Warm water will soften the cobs faster.
Why do some cobs not dissolve well?
Those are cobs with a higher content of leaves that are, therefore, pressed firmer. These need a longer time to soak.
Why are the cobs partly dark green and partly yellowish?
Because the cobs are from different meadows and are mixed with each other after harvesting, in order to achieve an ideal content of crude fibre and crude protein and to increase biodiversity.
Is straw mixed in (light coloured, yellowish cobs, fibre)?
No, the lighter cobs and fibres originate from harvested grasses, very rich in crude fibre and stalky.
Can other feed, e.g. oats, be mixed with the cobs?
Yes.
My horse does not eat the cobs, what can be done?
Mix with feed that your horse likes and then reduce your feed gradually. Try an alternative product (such as e.g. PreAlpin WiesenflakesPreAlpin AsperoGrünhafer,…). Mix with carrot juice or apple juice.
Do horses lose or gain weight with the Wiesencobs - are they appropriate for easy keepers or obese horses?
The amount makes the difference. The cobs contain more nutrients than hay, however, provide less energy than grain. The cobs can be fed to underweight horses for build-up (then in addition to hay) or as grain substitute/treat in obese horses or horses sensitive to grain.
How long is the shelf life of the cobs?
At least 1 year - dry storage provided
Which herbs do the cobs contain?
No added medicinal herbs, only natural meadow herbs (ribgrass, yarrow, wild carrot, dandelion, caraway, cow parsley, meadow sage).
Are the contained herbs impairing during homoeopathic treatment?
No, no medicinal herbs (such as e.g. peppermint) are contained, only meadow herbs.
Are the herbs in the AGROBS hay substitutes doping relevant?
No, because the herbs are not added and the percentage of each herb does not exceed 0.5 % in the product.
When do soaked cobs begin to ferment?
Depending on the outside temperature. On hot summer days, they should not be soaked overnight. 3 hours at maximum during summer.
How much soaked cobs can maximally be fed per meal? Can it lead to an overloading of the stomach?
Approximately 3 kg of cobs per portion. Because the cobs' resting time in the stomach is not very long and horses normally do not take in such great amounts of cobs without a break.
Can dry cobs lead to a stomach impaction? Or to intestinal obstruction?
No. Fast eaters, that do not dissolve the cobs sufficiently in their mouth through salivation, tend to get oesophageal obstruction. Therefore, soak cobs before feeding to these kind of horses.
Can the cobs be fed to a horse with laminitis or would Protein Light be better?
The cobs can be fed to horses with laminitis. The amount has to be adjusted to the horse's body condition. Protein Light is not more appropriate for horses with laminitis than Wiesencobs.
Can AGROBS hay substitutes be fed to horses with a sensitive metabolism?
In general, yes. AGROBS hay substitutes can be fed to horses with a sensitive metabolism (e.g. Cushing, laminitis, PSSM, EMS), or sick horses. The amount of feed should be adjusted to the horse's body condition and its requirements.
Contact our employees for feeding advice.
What is the difference to less expensive cobs?
o higher biodiversity
o no grass waste
o no pure energy grass mixtures (sugar-rich grasses such as ryegrass)
o made from fresh grass and not from hay
o consistent quality
o no molasses
How can the grass be pressed to cobs / How do the cobs stick together? Do they contain molasses?
Wiesencobs do not contain molasses. The cobs merely stick together due to the pressure that develops during pressing.
