According to the relevant literature, horses are considered “old” from the age of about 18 – 20 years. However, there is no uniform standard.

Horses show their age in the form of grey hair on their heads, changes in metabolism, a reduced regenerative capacity and the complete wearing down or loss of teeth. This is when the requirements of ageing horses, which generally have greater problems processing feed, need to be addressed. The goal of feeding old horses should be to ensure sufficient energy and nutrient intake in order to maintain a good physical condition.

In most cases, the greatest problem is the complete wearing down of dental reserves or the loss of individual teeth. This makes it ever more difficult for horses to chew their basic feed and moisten it sufficiently with saliva. The formation of “hay rolls” is a sign of this happening. As a result of the insufficient raw fiber intake, horses lose weight, their intestinal flora is affected and diarrhea or colics are common consequences.

Basic feed is and remains the basis for horse nutrition, even in old age. If a horse has difficulty ingesting basic feed, sensible alternatives need to be found. Trying to counteract the process by increasing the amount of concentrated feed usually only has short-term benefits. In the long term, the horse´s nutritional condition becomes worse.

PRE ALPIN® SENIOR consists of dry green fibres specially designed for older horses that are unable  to chew their basic feed sufficiently. The fiber length of 3 – 20 mm corersponds to the ground-down basic feed in the case of an intact set of teeth. PRE ALPIN® SENIOR thereby covers the horse´s raw fiber requirements completely. In addition, it is free of dust and mildew.

Added cold-pressed linseed oil provides further benefits. In addition to energy, it provides the horse with essential fatty acids.

Feeding Recommendation

  • as roughage (100% hay replacement): approximately 1.5 kg per 100 kg ideal body weight per day
  • as concentrated feed: 1.2 kg substitute approximately 1 kg of gain
  • to enhance roughage: 1 kg replaces 1 kg hay
  • An AGROBS® feed scoop (1.5 l) holds an average of approx. 310 g of Pre Alpin® Senior. To the overview of all product weights.

AGROBS® recommends slow feeding. When switching feeds, we advise that the feed be moistened or soaked if needed, particularly for fast eaters, senior horses, horses with dental problems and those who don’t drink enough.

What is the difference to PreAlpin Wiesencobs?
Concerning the ingredients, only the linseed oil, but also the form of application.
Why is PreAlpin Senior more expensive than PreAlpin Wiesencobs?
Because the production is costlier (PreAlpin Senior is produced from Wiesencobs).
Can PreAlpin Senior be fed as sole hay substitute?
Yes.
Does the PreAlpin Senior have to be fed dampened or soaked or is a dry feeding possible?
Horses, that drink enough water and, therefore, produce enough saliva, can be fed with dry PreAlpin Senior. Unfortunately, many aged horses have an insufficient intake of water. Here, dampening the feed is appropriate. But also when changing the feed, with hasty eaters, old horses and horses with dental problems, we advise you to generally moisten or soak the feed.
When does soaked PreAlpin Senior begin to ferment?
Depending on the outside temperature. On hot summer days, they should not be soaked overnight. 3 hours at maximum during summer.
Which amount has to be fed?
Depending on body condition and amount of hay. 1 kg of PreAlpin Senior substitutes 1 kg of hay.
Why is linseed oil contained in PreAlpin Senior?
In order to hold the fines together and to avoid the fibres from breaking. Further, the content of important essential fatty acids is increased.
How much linseed oil is mixed in?
2 %, cold pressed
How does this lead to weight gain in my underweight senior horse?
By feeding PreAlpin Senior in addition to hay, respectively substitutes the hay at a 1:1 ratio.
Is it only appropriate for seniors (aged horses)?
Concerning its ingredients, it is appropriate for every horse. Due to the fine fibres with little structure, it is especially appropriate for horses with dental problems (aged horses).
Is Pre Alpin Senior also suitable for Cushing horses?
Yes. It is molasses-free and low in starch and sugar.
How long is the shelf life of PreAlpin Senior?
1 year - dry and cool storage provided
