PPID did not seem to exist in the past. A horse aged 15+ simply developed age-related ailments that worsened as it grew older. Sometimes, such a senior horse was lucky and the veterinarian thought of what we then called Cushing’s disease.
Fortunately, this has changed over the last 20 years. New scientific insights have become accessible to more people. We now know that many of these ‘ailments’ are characteristics of PPID, the current name for this nasty condition. PPID horses are much less likely to go unnoticed, because we are more likely to raise the alarm if we think our horse has PPID.
